Celebrating 10 Years in Business with GoDaddy

I’ve hosted my company email through GoDaddy since I launched my business more than 10 years ago - so you can imagine how excited I was to be invited to celebrate my business’ 10-year-anniversary (!) on GoDaddy’s School of Hustle.

Host Shannon Traux interviewed me how I started and grew my business, what the top social media trends are today - and my top entrepreneurial tips for success.

Most importantly, thank you to School of Hustle for introducing me to my new favorite micro-influencer, Noodle.

E-School for Girls: Social Media Day

5th time's a charm!

Thank you E-School for Girls for inviting me to teach social media to your class 5 years in a row.

After I finished speaking about all things social, I was handed a flurry of thank you post-it notes from students, sharing some of my favs here!

Evolve MKD Influencer Panel

Prior to any speaking engagement, I do my research.

Last week, I joined Evolve MKD for a panel to discuss the influencer marketing industry, and before the panel, I did a search on Google.

I typed “Do influencers” into the search bar - and before I could finish my question, a series of suggested queries populated that shocked me.

The suggestions included:

Do influencers work? (Yes.)

Do influencers get paid? (Hell yes.)

Do influencers have agents?

Do influencers pay taxes?

The list goes on.

These search results made me realize just how little people know about this multi-billion dollar industry - and how important it is to educate people.

Thanks to Evolve MKD to inviting me to speak on the subject of influencer marketing — and interview Hannah Berner, Steph Selter, Gergana Ivanova and Nikki French.

Own It! Women Entrepreneur's Conference

Social media has transformed the way we interact with customers - and how customers engage with us.

Last week I visited SUNY Ulster to speak with 150+ small business owners at the Own It! Entrepreneurial Women’s Conference about how to use social media to create brand loyalty - from creating quality content to engaging with influencers (something I never expected to call myself)!

Head to Hudson Valley Mag to read more about the conference - and see what I had to say about social media, freelancing and how to “own it” when it comes down to business.

As e-commerce becomes a staple of the shopping experience, retailers are tasked with finding new ways to connect and maintain relationships with their customers.

At NRF 2019 last week, I talked to Samsung’s Director of Enterprise Sales Hamshy Raveendran about some of the biggest challenges retailers face today and how Samsung is addressing those pain points for customers and brands alike.

We also got a look at some of the most exciting retail innovations to come from experts including Vala Afshar, Chief Digital Evangelist at Salesforce; social media influencer Evan Kirstel; John Soricelli, the Director of Technology and Analytics at Home Depot; and Nicole Reyhle, founder of Retail Minded.

One of the most anticipated innovations in retail? The connected home. I talked to Ian Hutchinson, head of Business Development for the Retail Vertical at Samsung Electronics America, about the relationship between future homes and the future of retail.

Until next year, NRF!

FIT: The Business of Social Media

FIT: The Business of Social Media

As soon as I left my talk at Fashion Institute of Technology this week, I got this note from one of the students:

"I follow a lot of social media influencers on many platforms, and this is the first time I have had the chance to hear the behind the scenes of what is portrayed to be such a glamorous and 'easy' lifestyle. With society how it is today, a lot of the times myself and a lot of people I know don’t really trust social media influencers when they are promoting products because they are paid to promote. It was really refreshing to find out that there is lot of integrity behind who and what you promote, and it’s reassuring to know that hopefully there are other influencers out there like you. A lot of the times it is hard to believe someone is being genuine about a product when it is a paid sponsorship but hearing your side and how you run your business was insightful and revitalizing."

Thank you to the wonderful students at FIT for having me - and for the many beautiful thank you notes like this one. You make this influencer feel good at work every day.

Thank you to my fellow UCF Knights for joining and asking great questions, and a huge shout-out to Nicholson School of Communication and my former journalism professor Rick Brunson, who I will forever be honored to have shared a stage with.

It was such a pleasure to be back at the Fashion Institute of Technology to teach (some of the world’s best-dressed students) about how to better use social media to connect with retail customers.

Speaking of retail, throwback to NRF with Samsung earlier this year, where I had the opportunity to chat with Steffen Schenk, business unit director at Barrows, about the future relationship between data and retail. Check out the interview.

And shout out to Ted Baker for keeping me in good company with the fashion elite at FIT!

Influencer Best Practices with Edelman PR &

Influencer Best Practices with Edelman PR &

So you want to be an influencer?!

Read more of my thoughts on the influencer industry over at Ad Age, where I explain why I love seeing the hashtags #ad and #sponsored.

An Afternoon with Fresenius University

An Afternoon with Fresenius University

I spent a lovely afternoon last week with the business school students of Hochschule Fresenius, visiting New York from Germany this month. I showed them my Samsung commercial (filmed in Vienna last summer), and talked about the power of partnerships.

There are a lot of things to consider when pursuing partnerships - from expectations and deliverables, to competitor awareness and of course, payments.

As a full-time freelancer and business owner, I'm often asked about how I initiate relationships with brands. Head to Forbes to learn more about how to negotiate your rates, and to AdAge to read my thoughts on brand-sponsored content (Spoiler alert: I'm all for the #ad and #sponsored endorsements if I truly believe in the product.)

E-School for Girls | Social Media Day

E-School for Girls | Social Media Day

This week, I had the pleasure of teaching high school students from all five boroughs of New York City how to use social media to land their dream jobs.

We covered the fine art of using LinkedIn to create a digital resume - and how to write an eye-catching bio to impress any recruiter (especially when the inevitable lay-off happens). More on that in this Moneyish interview.

Thanks E-School for Girls for having me back (for the 3rd year)! See you next summer!

United Nations Panel | Innovative Technologies

Thanks so much to the United NationsNGO Committee on Sustainable Development New York for having me on the Innovative Technologies panel last week. As you may know, technology has a tremendous economic and global impact, and I was honored to share some of my favorite campaigns I've worked on with the influential room.

Joining me were UN Women's Senior Policy Advisor on Innovation Hélène Moliner, Thankful's Mike Chuter and the First Secretary of Permanent Mission of Mexico to the United Nations Bruno Rios Sanchez.

Content is... queen.

I had a great time at the 2018 Modern Marketing Summit in New York, where I had the pleasure of interviewing execs from American Express, Bank of America, Coca-Cola and more about the business of content.

Check out my interview with Andy Goldberg of GE, and learn about how the company is using experiential marketing to create more authentic connections with its customers.

Grand Cayman Island Tourism Talk

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Visit Cayman Islands. The opinions and text are all my own.

Over the summer, you may recall that I took a Euro-trip with Samsung Business to showcase how Samsung's Bixby Vision helps me identify landmarks (and translate foreign menus). What you might not have known is how instrumental the tourism boards of Austria and Germany were in helping me gain access to the landmarks, sites and sounds of both countries.

That trip was one example of the power of unlikely partners (in this case, Samsung Business and the Austria Tourism Board).

I was honored to speak further about the power of partnerships at Cayman Islands Department of Tourism Annual Conference (where I appropriately got photo bombed by a sun beam)!

Thanks Cayman for inviting me to speak! Excited for round two in Cayman Islands! ;)

It’s not everyday I get to be on a panel with people I’m lucky to call friends. Thanks Fiverr for powering last night’s candid discussion about building a business... And thanks L.A. for coming through!

Joining me on the panel at General Assembly were tech journalist Jessica Naziri Sabet, financial advisor Winnie Sun, career expert Lauren Berger, music artist Shanee Pink, and music executive and producer, Aton Ben-Horin

WeWork Creator Awards NYC

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of WeWork. The opinions and text are all my own.

The WeWork Creator Awards recognizes and rewards NYC's top creators. Which is why, as a fellow NYC creator, this event is near and dear to my heart!

Click here to watch me open the awards, and keep watching as some of the city's most driven and passionate individuals take the stage, pitch their ideas and win funding for their projects.

Before the event, I sat down with founders Anna Kaiser, Michael Lastoria of &pizza, Ryan Babenzien of Greats Brand and Joey Wolffer of Wölffer Estate Vineyard, discussing their journeys building businesses in New York. See the full conversation here

And following the awards, I had the pleasure of moderating a live Q&A with Creator Awards winners Girls Health Champions, Eat Offbeat, Jae Jin and Atomic by Design. Check out the live Q&A here.

Thank you to the WeWork team for including me in such an incredible night!

Dell UnConference 2017

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Dell. The opinions and text are all my own.

I couldn't be prouder to spend the day with my friends at Dell HQ in Austin last week learning more about their commitment to innovation and design.

But one of my favorite things about Dell is their commitment to sustainability.

Like the fact that Dell is committed to removing 16,000 pounds of plastics out of the ocean. Learn more about their sustainability initiatives here.

The Power of Onlyness with Women at Forbes

“Some questions you can't answer, but also can't stop thinking about.”

Thanks to Women@Forbes for inviting me to be part of a Q&A panel with the incredibly talented Nilofer Merchant about her new book The Power of Onlyness.

Merchant's inspiring book talks about how it's more possible than ever to make a difference in the world, regardless of status or rank. Check out the full Q&A on Facebook Live here
